Finally went out to see The Social Network (aka the Facebook movie) and it was really interesting! Part of why I was persistent in going out and seeing it was because I like reflecting on the evolution of this unique social network that, in its infancy was considered by some as a fad, fundamentally revolutionized the way we interact with our friends.
Without giving away too much of the film, it is interesting to see how blogging (Livejournal, now that's old school) played a role in the beginning sequence, subtle reminders of what the virtual landscape was before Facebook. I found it funny that not even a decade has passed and yet the setting feels like that taken from Dead Poet's Society.
What struck me most was the relationship between the two main characters. Their friendship seemed a little one-sided to begin with, and became increasingly obvious as the movie progressed who was going to get the sympathy points from the audience. It's worth mentioning that the film is based off a book, written from the perspective of one of the co-founders.
There is always that question, would you rather have many friends and feel popular or one/two very close friends. I know what my answer would be. I will probably go back to this topic at some point, but I really need to jet.
What do you look for in a friend?
