Chilean minors

I wanted to incorporate some kind of statistic about Chilean youth into this post but my Google search redirected me to news coverage about the 33 miners rescued. When the news story broke out over 2 months ago I thought it would be something that would be forgotten about - I'm so glad to see that the world has been impacted by this incredible story.

Reading an article about it this morning, what inspired me most was their courage through the entire ordeal. Reading some of their handwritten notes from when they were first discovered, they had hope (and incredible trust in God!). Their foreman, Luis Urzua, told their president, "We had strength, we had spirit... We wanted to fight for our families, and that was the greatest thing." BAM! Fight for our families. That right there got me thinking a little bit.

The joy you feel watching the faces of their family members as these men were being pulled out, it was so joyous (this sentence could use a little work). The family unit is an interesting relationship to look at. It's what kept them going. Others have commented on how they could have turned on each other but instead worked together. I think because they themselves were a family.

I've often heard the expression to fight for the ones you love. To hear the words you're worth fighting for says something to the value found within you. I'm glad these 33 men persevered those 69 days, and I hope they will continue to fight the good fight even outside the depths of despair.

I'm in the mood for some chili.
