Training with Purpose

The sermon was about spiritual battles and how to see through difficult situations. The kicker was actually at the end, when a woman came up to the pulpit to share what was on her heart. She told the congregation that when she was in the military, they would train and do simulations like it was actual wartime. She would clean her gun so many times over that she would be able to do it in the dark. As she was explaining this it made me think of the film Behind Enemy Lines where the main character was tired of doing simulations when they weren't actually in war, until he finds himself in enemy territory and applies the skills he learned to survive.

That image really brought to life the importance of spiritually "training" - reading your bible every day and praying continuously. It's so important to 'train' yourself to do these things so that when time for battle arrives you will be ready.

I find that most times I can pull a movie from my head and use it to illustrate a spiritual conception. 300, for instance, is great to illustrate teamwork and the body of Christ. If only there were more Christ-glorifying films that are theatrically attractive that I can use.
